| Girls' Lacrosse |
Welcome to Calvert County's newest and fastest sport for girls. Co-sponsored with Calvert County Parks and Recreation, Calvert County Girl's Lacrosse League was formed in 2003 to introduce girls ages 6 to 14 to lacrosse, develop fitness, athletics and sportsmanship. Although similar to the boys game, girls lacrosse differs in basic rules of play and physical contact. Women's rules limit stick checking and prohibit body contact. Stick checking skills are introduced in a modified format in the middle school years. Eye protection, mouth guards and girls sticks are required for each player. Enthusiasm for lacrosse is growing rapidly across the nation and in our area. Beginning in 2000, Southern Maryland High Schools began a girls' varsity lacrosse program, quickly followed by junior varsity programs. Calvert County Girl's Lacrosse league focuses on the basic skills of the game, gradually advancing in difficulty with age and ability. This provides girls a chance to particpate in this great game at a youth level. Lacrosse has become a popular college sport for women; therefore, players are needed at the youth level to feed high school and college athletic programs. Our league has grown steadily to include over 180 players in the 2007 season. The league plays each spring from March through the end of May capping off with a tournament in eary June. Players younger than 2nd grade are invited to join the Sticklets - a fun way to introduce lacrosse and fitness to younger players. New players of all ages are welcome!
